Yep, I've officially moved over to PCLOS as my linux distro. Not that I dislike Mepis, in fact, I loved every minute of it, but since I pretty badly trashed my install, I thought today would be a good day to try out PCLOS like I'd wanted to.
PCLOS (PC Linux OS) is Texstar's version of Mandrake (now Mandriva of course). I recall Tex's work from my days back in Mandrake 7/8 years ago, and figured any distro he's putting together has GOT to be pretty freakin' sweet. And it is. KDE 3.4.1, great auto-detection of my digital camera (WAY better than what I went through to get it to work on Mepis), and so far things seem smooth with the DVD super drive too. No problems mounting/unmounting the drive ... haven't tried anything with K3B yet though ... or movie playback. So I'm into hour 2 of compiling Quanta 3.4.1, since it's not installed and there doesn't appear to be a package for it. (PCLOS is based on Mandrake, so I'm back in an RPM distro ... but it uses Synaptic for management just like Mepis and the Debians do. Texstar was the one who turned a lot of OLD Mandrake (v7/8) users onto apt4rpm ... and Synaptic was his front-end to it.) In many ways though, it's almost like I didn't change distros ... except for my data's scattered all over now and I have to re-install a handful of things. Oh well! I got apache/php/mysql up and running pretty quick. Virtual host setup went pretty smooth too. I'm actually quite surprised that it is actually FASTER and uses less RAM than Mepis did. (With Konq, Firefox, and the make on Quanta running, I was only at about 175MB of RAM used.) If all goes well, I think I might stick with this one for a while. Then again, I may decide I hate it after a while and try to repair my Mepis install ... who knows. Change is fun ... if not time consuming. -------------------- |

Here's a quick screenie of the new desktop. So far, I'm REALLY liking it. Can't wait to drive it around the block a bit.
(Yeah, that's my little girl ... but it's a pic from last year. This post has been edited by DigitaLink: 17 Jul 2005 22:32 -------------------- |
